Advanced Ingredients, Superior Results

Arnica montana, Symphytum officinale (comfrey), Hypericum perforatum and Millefolium (yarrow) each have real modern clinical research at concentrations well above this product's homeopathic dilutions, alongside a long history of traditional homeopathic use for bruising, muscle pain and minor trauma. Here is what the wider research explores, presented honestly including its limits.

Arnica montana (3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy for bruising, swelling and localized soreness; the same plant is also studied at much higher, non-homeopathic concentrations in topical gels for pain and bruising.

Homeopathic dilution

Belladonna (3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant beginning to flower, associated with sudden, intense local inflammation and throbbing pain.

Homeopathic dilution

Bellis perennis (1X, 3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant, historically used for bruising and soft-tissue trauma.

Homeopathic dilution

Echinacea angustifolia (1X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant, traditionally associated with wound and tissue support.

Homeopathic dilution

Hamamelis virginiana (1X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the bark including root bark, traditionally associated with bruised, sore tissue.

Homeopathic dilution

Hypericum perforatum (3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant, traditionally associated with nerve-rich areas and injury pain.

Homeopathic dilution

Millefolium (1X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant (yarrow), traditionally associated with bruising and minor bleeding under the skin.

Homeopathic dilution

Ruta graveolens (3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the whole plant, associated with strain-type injuries to tendons and connective tissue around the joints.

Homeopathic dilution

Symphytum officinale (1X, 3X, 6X)

A traditional homeopathic remedy prepared from the root, associated with support for bruised or injured muscle and joint tissue; the same root is also studied at much higher, non-homeopathic concentrations in topical extracts for musculoskeletal pain.

How to use it

If the area is swollen, ice the injury first

For a fresh injury, applying ice can help reduce swelling before applying the cream.

Apply generously to the affected area

Adults and children: apply generously to the affected area(s) once daily or as needed.

External use only

Do not apply to open wounds or broken skin.

Rest the injured area

For strains, resting the area can support recovery alongside the cream. Consult a healthcare practitioner if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and if symptoms persist or worsen.

What the research says about these ingredients

Educational summaries of published research related to this product's active ingredients and the condition it addresses; not product-specific claims beyond this product's own Health Canada-authorized use. Orange Naturals Pain Relief Cream's own authorized use under DIN-HM 80055594 is a homeopathic topical preparation used to help relieve minor bruises, joint pain, muscle pain and strains. As the label itself states, homeopathic remedies are highly diluted, and clinical evidence for homeopathy specifically is mixed - presented honestly below, including null and inconclusive findings.

Arnica Montana for Bruising & Post-Surgical Swelling (Studied Above This Cream's Homeopathic Dilution)

A placebo-controlled trial found homeopathic, orally-taken Arnica montana reduced bruise size after face-lift surgery on some but not all days measured

In 29 patients undergoing rhytidectomy, those taking a homeopathic (highly diluted), oral form of Arnica montana perioperatively had a statistically significantly smaller area of bruising on postoperative days 1 and 7 compared with placebo, but not on days 5 and 10, and no difference was found in the degree of color change.

Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial (n=29)
Seeley et al., Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery (2006)
Arnica Montana for Bruising & Post-Surgical Swelling (Studied Above This Cream's Homeopathic Dilution)

A randomized trial found topical arnica gel did not reduce bruising after laser treatment

In 19 patients undergoing pulsed-dye laser treatment for facial telangiectases, topical arnica gel applied before or after treatment showed no statistically significant difference from a vehicle-only control in preventing or resolving laser-induced bruising.

Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial (n=19)
Alonso et al., Dermatologic Surgery (2002)
Arnica Montana for Bruising & Post-Surgical Swelling (Studied Above This Cream's Homeopathic Dilution)

Three randomized trials found homeopathic arnica reduced post-surgical knee swelling in only one of three procedures studied

Across three randomized, placebo-controlled trials in patients undergoing knee arthroscopy, artificial knee joint implantation, or cruciate ligament reconstruction (319 patients total), homeopathic Arnica montana showed a trend toward less postoperative knee swelling in all three trials, but the difference reached statistical significance only in the cruciate ligament reconstruction trial.

Three randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials (n=319)
Brinkhaus et al., Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2006)
Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Topical Extract for Musculoskeletal Pain (Studied Above This Cream's Dilution)

A review found comfrey root extract clinically proven to relieve pain and swelling of muscles and joints

Summarizing randomised controlled trials and postmarketing studies of comfrey (Symphytum officinale) root extract, this review found the topical extract effective for degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia of the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, including in children aged 3 and older.

Narrative review of clinical trials
Staiger, Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift (2012)
Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Topical Extract for Musculoskeletal Pain (Studied Above This Cream's Dilution)

A randomized trial found comfrey-based creams superior to a reference cream for knee osteoarthritis pain and stiffness

In 43 adults with primary knee osteoarthritis applying cream 3 times daily for 6 weeks, both 10% and 20% comfrey root extract creams produced significantly greater improvements in pain, stiffness and daily function than a eucalyptus reference cream, with only minor, temporary skin reactions in a small number of participants.

Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled multiclinical trial (n=43)
Smith & Jacobson, Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (2011)
Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Topical Extract for Musculoskeletal Pain (Studied Above This Cream's Dilution)

A randomized trial found comfrey extract ointment non-inferior, and possibly superior, to diclofenac gel for acute ankle sprains

In 164 outpatients with acute unilateral ankle sprains treated for about a week, four times daily, comfrey extract ointment was confirmatorily non-inferior to diclofenac gel on pain-on-pressure measurements, with secondary results suggesting comfrey extract may be superior on some measures.

Observer-blind randomized multicenter trial (n=164)
Predel et al., Phytomedicine (2005)
Millefolium (Yarrow) & Hypericum Perforatum Topical Extracts for Wound Healing & Bruising (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A randomized trial found both yarrow and St. John's wort ointments reduced episiotomy pain, redness, swelling and bruising

In 140 first-time mothers randomized to Achillea millefolium ointment, Hypericum perforatum ointment, a placebo ointment, or no treatment, both active ointments significantly reduced perineal pain at 7, 10 and 14 days postpartum, and reduced redness and swelling at 7-10 days and bruising (ecchymosis) at 7 days, compared with the control groups.

Randomized double-blind controlled trial (n=140)
Hajhashemi et al., Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine (2017)
Millefolium (Yarrow) & Hypericum Perforatum Topical Extracts for Wound Healing & Bruising (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A randomized trial found topical Hypericum perforatum improved cesarean wound healing and reduced scar pain

In 144 women after cesarean delivery applying Hypericum perforatum ointment, a placebo ointment, or no treatment 3 times daily for 16 days, the treatment group had significantly better wound healing at 10 days and less scarring, pain and itching at 40 days than the placebo and control groups.

Randomized double-blind controlled trial (n=144)
Samadi et al., Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2010)
Millefolium (Yarrow) & Hypericum Perforatum Topical Extracts for Wound Healing & Bruising (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A review confirmed yarrow's traditional anti-inflammatory use with modern pharmacological findings

Reviewing modern pharmacological findings on yarrow (Achillea millefolium), this review found flavonoids mediate its traditional antispasmodic effects and that yarrow extracts inhibit human neutrophil elastase, an enzyme involved in inflammation - supporting, in the authors' words, the traditional use of yarrow as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Narrative review
Benedek & Kopp, Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift (2007)
Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Topical Anti-Inflammatory Activity (Modest, Mixed Evidence)

A study found hamamelis distillate lotions had a modest anti-inflammatory effect in a UV-induced skin redness test

In 40 volunteers, three different 10% hamamelis distillate lotions showed an anti-inflammatory effect versus untreated skin after UV-induced erythema, but hydrocortisone formulations were considerably more effective, and only one of the three hamamelis lotions significantly outperformed its own vehicle base.

Randomized comparative trial (n=40)
Hughes-Formella et al., Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology (2002)
Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Topical Anti-Inflammatory Activity (Modest, Mixed Evidence)

A study found hamamelis distillate's anti-inflammatory activity depended on formulation and did not increase with a higher dose

Comparing hamamelis distillate at two concentrations and vehicle formulations against hydrocortisone and chamomile creams in UV- and tape-stripping-induced skin irritation, a phosphatidylcholine-containing hamamelis cream showed anti-inflammatory activity, but a four-fold increase in hamamelis concentration did not improve the effect, and hydrocortisone remained more effective.

Randomized double-blind comparative trial (n=24)
Korting et al., European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (1993)
Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Topical Anti-Inflammatory Activity (Modest, Mixed Evidence)

A randomized trial found hamamelis distillate cream no more effective than its own vehicle for atopic eczema

In 72 patients with moderately severe atopic eczema over 14 days, hydrocortisone cream was significantly more effective than hamamelis distillate cream at reducing itching, redness and scaling, and hamamelis distillate cream did not outperform its own drug-free vehicle base - an honest null result for this specific use.

Randomized double-blind controlled trial (n=72)
Korting et al., European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (1995)
Belladonna, Echinacea Angustifolia & Bellis Perennis - Whole-Plant Pharmacology (Not This Cream's Dilution)

An animal-model study found Atropa belladonna extract had analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity

A methanolic extract of Atropa belladonna (the plant belladonna is prepared from) showed significant, dose-dependent pain-inhibiting activity in a standard writhing-response test and significant anti-inflammatory activity in a paw-inflammation model in animals - a whole-plant-extract finding, not evidence for this product's highly diluted homeopathic preparation.

In vivo animal-model study
Owais et al., Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2014)
Belladonna, Echinacea Angustifolia & Bellis Perennis - Whole-Plant Pharmacology (Not This Cream's Dilution)

An animal study found Echinacea root extract had anti-inflammatory and wound-healing activity

Comparing whole-root extracts of Echinacea pallida and Echinacea angustifolia in an animal model, both species showed anti-inflammatory and wound-healing activity, attributed partly to a compound called echinacoside - again a whole-plant-extract finding, not evidence for this product's homeopathic dilution.

In vivo animal-model comparative study
Speroni et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2002)
Belladonna, Echinacea Angustifolia & Bellis Perennis - Whole-Plant Pharmacology (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A phytochemistry study noted Bellis perennis' traditional use as a wound herb for bruises while isolating an antitumor compound

Describing Bellis perennis (common daisy) as a traditional wound herb historically used for bruises, broken bones and wounds, this study's own experiments focused on isolating and testing a saponin compound for antitumor activity, not on bruising or pain outcomes - the traditional-use background is noted honestly, distinct from what the study itself actually tested.

Phytochemistry / bioassay-guided isolation study
Pehlivan Karakas et al., Pharmaceutical Biology (2014)
Ruta Graveolens & the Homeopathic Materia Medica Evidence Base (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A review found human studies of Ruta mainly involve homeopathic formulations for musculoskeletal disorders, alongside whole-plant anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies

Systematically reviewing the traditional use, pharmacology and safety of the genus Ruta (rue), this review found that in vitro and preclinical studies show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, and that existing human studies of Ruta are mainly homeopathic formulations used in musculoskeletal disorders - though the review also flags that concentrated, non-homeopathic rue extracts can cause photosensitivity and toxicity at high doses.

Systematic review
Adel-Mehraban et al., Planta Medica (2025)
Ruta Graveolens & the Homeopathic Materia Medica Evidence Base (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A systematic review found homeopathic pathogenetic trials (the studies underlying remedies like these) were generally of low methodological quality

Reviewing 156 homeopathic pathogenetic trials ('provings') on 143 medicines published from 1945 to 1995, this review found most had design flaws, particularly lack of proper randomization, blinding and placebo control - relevant context for individual remedies in this formula, none of which have dedicated modern clinical trials of their own homeopathic dilution for bruising or pain identified in this search.

Systematic review (156 trials)
Dantas et al., Homeopathy (2007)
Ruta Graveolens & the Homeopathic Materia Medica Evidence Base (Not This Cream's Dilution)

A methodology paper proposed improved indices for analyzing homeopathic proving-study data

Noting that traditional homeopathic proving studies are generally of low methodological quality, this paper introduces quantitative and qualitative indices for comparing symptoms reported by volunteers on the active remedy versus placebo - a methods-improvement effort, not new efficacy evidence for any specific remedy in this formula.

Other Homeopathic Formulas Sharing Some of This Cream's Own Remedies, Studied for Joint & Post-Surgical Pain (Different Products)

A published trial protocol describes testing a homeopathic injection against a corticosteroid injection for shoulder pain

This peer-reviewed study protocol describes a planned 3-arm trial comparing a homeopathic injection product against dexamethasone injection and placebo for rotator cuff syndrome and bursitis in at least 160 patients - a protocol only, with results not yet reported at time of this search, for a different homeopathic product than this cream.

Other Homeopathic Formulas Sharing Some of This Cream's Own Remedies, Studied for Joint & Post-Surgical Pain (Different Products)

A randomized trial found a homeopathic gel as effective as an NSAID gel for knee osteoarthritis

In 184 outpatients with knee osteoarthritis treated for 4 weeks, a homeopathic gel (a different formula than this cream) reduced pain on walking by a similar or greater margin than piroxicam NSAID gel, with a comparable local-reaction adverse-event rate.

Randomized double-blind controlled trial (n=184)
van Haselen & Fisher, Rheumatology (2000)
Other Homeopathic Formulas Sharing Some of This Cream's Own Remedies, Studied for Joint & Post-Surgical Pain (Different Products)

A feasibility trial found individualized homeopathy no more effective than placebo for knee osteoarthritis pain

In 60 patients with acute painful knee osteoarthritis over 2 weeks, both individualized homeopathy and placebo groups showed statistically significant improvement in pain, stiffness and function scores, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant - an honest null result for individualized homeopathy (a different approach than this cream's fixed combination formula).

Safety & Tolerability of Homeopathic Remedies, Including in Children (Label: Adults and Children)

A systematic review found a low rate of reported adverse events across Ayush interventions, including homeopathy, for spine conditions

Reviewing 113 studies of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy interventions for cervical and lumbar spondylosis, only 13% described any adverse event, with homeopathy specifically among the lowest-reporting categories (1.8%) - though the authors caution this may partly reflect underreporting rather than proven safety.

Systematic review (113 studies)
Ponnaiah et al., European Journal of Medical Research (2024)
Safety & Tolerability of Homeopathic Remedies, Including in Children (Label: Adults and Children)

A scoping review found homeopathic remedies for children were generally well tolerated, though efficacy evidence remained scarce and inconsistent

Reviewing phytotherapeutic, homeopathic and bee-product treatments for acute infections in children, this review found homeopathic evidence scarce and methodologically inconsistent for efficacy, but noted both categories were generally well tolerated with few adverse events reported across the studies reviewed - a safety signal, not an efficacy claim, and about a different condition (pediatric infections) than this product's own bruising/pain use.

Scoping review
Bertoni et al., Nutrients (2025)
Safety & Tolerability of Homeopathic Remedies, Including in Children (Label: Adults and Children)

A pediatric randomized trial of a different complex homeopathic product reported good tolerability with few adverse reactions

In 200 children aged 6 and under prone to recurrent respiratory infections, a complex homeopathic product (not this product's own formula) was compared with another homeopathic comparator over 6 weeks; both groups tolerated treatment well, with only a small number of non-serious adverse drug reactions reported - general supporting context for pediatric tolerability of complex homeopathic products as a category.
