What the research says about this formula's ingredients
Educational summaries of published research on ashwagandha, rhodiola, Siberian ginseng, schisandra, astragalus and L-tyrosine generally; not product-specific claims. Orange Naturals Bounce Back Adrenal Recharge's own authorized use under NPN 80076026 is that it is used in Herbal Medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress.
A randomized trial found a proprietary ashwagandha extract significantly reduced cortisol, stress and anxiety scores
In a 8-week, double-blind, three-arm, placebo-controlled trial of 141 healthy adults with moderate stress and anxiety, both a proprietary ashwagandha root extract and a standard ashwagandha root extract significantly reduced serum cortisol and improved Perceived Stress Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and mood scores compared with placebo over 8 weeks.
Human RCT (n=141)A meta-analysis of 9 trials found ashwagandha significantly improved perceived stress, anxiety and cortisol
Pooling 558 patients across 9 randomized controlled trials, ashwagandha formulations significantly improved Perceived Stress Scale scores, Hamilton Anxiety Scale scores and serum cortisol levels compared with placebo; adverse events across the included studies were limited to mild-to-moderate severity.
Meta-analysis (n=558)A meta-analysis found ashwagandha significantly lowers cortisol but did not significantly reduce perceived stress scores
Reviewing 7 studies on cortisol and 6 on perceived stress (488 participants) from randomized controlled trials, ashwagandha produced a statistically significant reduction in cortisol levels, but showed no statistically significant impact on Perceived Stress Scale scores - an honest, mixed finding highlighting a gap between a biological stress marker and self-reported stress.
Meta-analysisA review of 16 human studies found Rhodiola rosea may improve exercise time-to-exhaustion in some conditions
Reviewing at least 16 human investigations, acute Rhodiola rosea supplementation (about 200mg containing ~1% salidroside and ~3% rosavin, taken 60 minutes before exercise) prolonged time-to-exhaustion and improved time-trial performance in some studies, though the reviewers concluded the literature does not unanimously show Rhodiola to be ergogenic and effects on muscle damage and perceived exertion remain equivocal.
Review (16+ human studies)A trial found salidroside, Rhodiola's key active compound, improved oxygen utilization and reduced exercise-induced muscle damage
In 50 healthy active young adults, 16 days of salidroside supplementation (60mg/day) enhanced oxygen uptake during high-intensity intermittent exercise and prevented the post-exercise rise in serum myoglobin (a muscle-damage marker) seen in the placebo group, while also maintaining more stable mood states.
Human RCT (n=50)A review describes encouraging clinical evidence for Rhodiola rosea in managing stress-induced fatigue and burnout
Summarizing clinical studies on Rhodiola rosea preparations, the review reports the majority of evidence concerns cognitive function and mental performance under conditions of life-stress, fatigue and burnout, alongside some evidence for enhanced physical performance in both athletes and untrained individuals.
ReviewA review of 46 Soviet-era human trials found Eleutherococcus senticosus benefited physical and mental endurance
Archival retrieval of 46 human clinical trials conducted in the USSR between 1962 and 1986 (29 placebo-controlled) on healthy volunteers found Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng) extract appeared to benefit cognitive function and physical and mental stamina under varying conditions, including normal work, high temperatures and high altitude.
Review (46 historical human trials)A preclinical study found a liposoluble fraction of Siberian ginseng extended swimming time to exhaustion in mice
In mice given a liposoluble fraction of Acanthopanax senticosus (Siberian ginseng) orally for 9 days, forced-swim time to exhaustion was significantly longer than in the control group, with reduced markers of muscle damage - a preclinical (animal) finding suggesting one mechanism behind the plant's traditional antifatigue use.
Preclinical study (animal)A review found good scientific evidence that Siberian ginseng and schisandra increase endurance and mental performance in mild fatigue
Assessing the clinical evidence for adaptogens in fatigue, the review concludes good scientific evidence exists for Schisandra chinensis and Eleutherococcus senticosus increasing endurance and mental performance in patients with mild fatigue and weakness, alongside strong evidence for Rhodiola rosea in attention and cognitive function.
ReviewA study of a 4-herb adaptogen blend including schisandra found changes in gene expression linked to energy metabolism
In cultured human fibroblasts, a combination extract of Eleutherococcus senticosus, Rhodiola rosea, Schisandra chinensis and Leuzea carthamoides altered expression of 67 genes involved in protein, lipid and energy metabolism, including a gene encoding a mitochondrial enzyme central to coenzyme A biosynthesis and energy production.
In vitro study (human cells)A mouse study found a Siberian-ginseng, schisandra and rhodiola combination increased endurance roughly seven-fold
In mice given ADAPT-232 (a fixed combination of Eleutherococcus senticosus, Schisandra chinensis and Rhodiola rosea extracts) for 7 days, forced-swim time-to-exhaustion increased dose-dependently up to approximately seven-fold versus baseline, alongside a marked rise in the stress-protective protein Hsp72 - a preclinical (animal) mechanistic finding.
Preclinical study (animal)A review describes single-dose stimulating effects of rhodiola, schisandra and Siberian ginseng on mental performance
Reviewing the sympatho-adrenal-system-mediated effects of single-dose Rhodiola rosea, Schisandra chinensis and Eleutherococcus senticosus, the authors report these adaptogens effectively increase mental performance and physical working capacity in humans without the addiction, tolerance or sleep-disrupting effects of traditional stimulants, with Rhodiola rosea showing the most rapid onset.
ReviewA review describes Astragalus membranaceus's antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects across multiple body systems
Reviewing the root's active components (polysaccharides, flavonoids, saponins), Astragalus membranaceus is described as exerting antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects that support cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, excretory, immune and endocrine system function and protection from cellular aging.
ReviewA review notes Astragalus membranaceus can bidirectionally regulate both blood pressure and immune function
Surveying the bidirectional (opposing-direction) pharmacological effects documented for several traditional Chinese medicines, Astragalus membranaceus is highlighted as an herb capable of regulating blood pressure and immune function in either direction depending on the physiological state of the person taking it - one proposed basis for its traditional adaptogenic classification.
ReviewA review describes Astragalus membranaceus as one of the seven important adaptogenic herbs protective against chronic stress
Reviewing Astragalus membranaceus's phytoconstituents (formononetin, astragalus polysaccharide, astragalosides), the herb is described as modulating the immune system and providing a protective effect against chronic stress, with demonstrated ability to reduce toxic effects of concurrently administered drugs in supportive-care contexts.
ReviewA review concluded tyrosine effectively enhances cognitive performance specifically under short-term stressful conditions
Reviewing the available cognitive and behavioral literature on tyrosine supplementation, the authors conclude tyrosine is an effective enhancer of cognition particularly in short-term stressful or cognitively demanding situations, but only when neurotransmitter (dopamine/norepinephrine) function is intact and temporarily depleted by the stressor - with limited benefit for physical exercise performance.
ReviewA review of ergogenic aids for heat-stress exercise names tyrosine among evidence-supported nutritional strategies
This narrative review of nutritional strategies for exertional-heat exposure discusses tyrosine alongside caffeine, creatine and nitrate as ergogenic aids with evidence for improving physiological, cognitive and recovery responses during acute heat-stress exercise, while noting effects vary by exercise modality, duration and intensity.
ReviewA trial found tyrosine ingestion did not improve cognitive or physical performance during military-style exercise in the heat
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover military-based load-carriage protocol conducted in 40 degrees C heat, a 150mg/kg dose of tyrosine elevated serum tyrosine substantially but did not improve cognitive function decrements or physical time-trial performance compared with placebo - an honest null result for this specific stress condition.
Human RCT (n=8, crossover)A review describes seven plant adaptogens acting through the HPA axis and shared molecular stress-response pathways
Reviewing the molecular mechanisms of seven key plant adaptogens including ashwagandha and Eleutherococcus, the compounds are described as regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, inducing heat-shock proteins Hsp70/Hsp16, and modulating SAPK/JNK and NF-kB signaling, with clinical studies confirming 14-30% cortisol reductions and decreased fatigue without adverse effects.
ReviewA review proposes adaptogens support recovery from long-lasting brain fatigue via HPA-axis and sympathoadrenal pathways
This narrative review describes how plant adaptogens interact with the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathoadrenal system to support the body's adaptive stress response, proposing a botanical hybrid of Rhodiola (Arctic Root) and Ashwagandha as a candidate for supporting recovery from long-lasting brain fatigue following stroke, trauma or viral infection.
ReviewA literature review identifies the five most-studied adaptogenic plants and their shared modes of action
Summarizing preclinical and clinical research on adaptogenic plants and phytochemicals, the review identifies Eleutherococcus senticosus, Panax ginseng, Withania somnifera, Schisandra chinensis and Rhodiola species as the most-investigated medicinal herbs for adaptogenic activity, with stress-modulatory, antioxidant, anti-fatigue and physical-endurance-enhancing effects as their main documented modes of action.
Literature reviewA 135-subject trial found sustained-release ashwagandha capsules were safe and well tolerated over 60 days
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 135 healthy stressed adults, 150mg and 300mg sustained-release ashwagandha root extract capsules significantly reduced Perceived Stress Scale scores and improved sleep quality and psychological well-being over 60 days, with no safety concerns reported in either active group.
Human RCT (n=135)A trial in patients with pre-existing hypertension found a standardized ashwagandha extract safely reduced stress and cortisol
In a 60-day, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III trial of 60 patients with stress, anxiety and pre-existing hypertension with cardiometabolic risk factors, a standardized ashwagandha extract (600mg/day) significantly reduced anxiety, stress and cortisol markers with favorable trends in blood pressure and no serious adverse events reported.
Human RCT (n=60)A 186-participant trial found both a rhodiola-schisandra-holy basil formula and a full-spectrum ashwagandha reduced stress safely
In a 60-day, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 186 adults with high stress, both a Rhodiola/holy basil/Schisandra chinensis formula and a full-spectrum ashwagandha formula significantly reduced Perceived Stress Scale scores and improved sleep quality and anxiety compared with placebo, with the trial registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.
