What the research says about silicon and biotin supplementation

Educational summaries of published research on soluble silicon (choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid class, the same soluble-silicon family as this product's LIVING SILICA® Methylsilanetriol) and biotin generally; not product-specific claims beyond what this product's own label authorizes. CanPrev Silicon + Biotin Beauty Liquid's own claim is the use authorized under NPN 80083505: helps to maintain healthy hair, nails, and skin.

Silicon and Bone/Collagen Biology

Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid boosted bone collagen formation in a 12-month RCT

In a 12-month randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 136 osteopenic women, adding choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) to calcium/vitamin D3 significantly raised the bone formation marker PINP (type I collagen synthesis) versus calcium/vitamin D3 alone, with a post-hoc femoral-neck bone density benefit at the 6mg dose.

Human RCT
Spector, Calomme, Anderson et al., BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders (2008)
Silicon and Bone/Collagen Biology

Higher dietary silicon intake tracked with greater hip bone density in a large population cohort

In 2,847 Framingham Offspring Study participants, dietary silicon intake correlated positively with bone mineral density at multiple hip sites in men and premenopausal women, with up to a 10% difference between the highest and lowest silicon-intake quintiles.

Human cohort study
Jugdaohsingh, Tucker, Qiao et al., Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (2004)
Silicon and Bone/Collagen Biology

Organic silicon partially reversed bone loss in ovariectomized rats via reduced resorption and increased formation

In estrogen-deficient rats, one month of oral organic silicon (silanol) reduced osteoclast number/surface and raised bone formation rates at the tibia, modestly improving trabecular bone volume - consistent with silicon's proposed role in collagen cross-linking during bone growth.

Animal study
Hott, de Pollak, Modrowski et al., Calcified Tissue International (1993)
Silicon and Skin, Hair, Nail Health

Oral choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid improved skin surface, mechanical properties, and hair/nail brittleness in a placebo-controlled trial

In 50 women with photodamaged skin, 20 weeks of oral ch-OSA (10mg Si/day) significantly improved skin microrelief/roughness and mechanical anisotropy versus placebo, while self-reported brittleness of both hair and nails also improved significantly versus baseline.

Human RCT
Barel, Calomme, Timchenko et al., Archives of Dermatological Research (2005)
Silicon and Skin, Hair, Nail Health

Stabilized orthosilicic acid supplementation raised skin and cartilage collagen concentration in a controlled animal study

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled feeding study in calves, silicon supplementation as stabilized orthosilicic acid significantly increased serum silicon and dermal collagen concentration, with serum silicon positively correlating with cartilage collagen levels.

Calomme, Vanden Berghe, Biological Trace Element Research (1997)
Silicon and Skin, Hair, Nail Health

Review identifies silicon among trace elements supporting skin structure

A review of minerals and trace elements in dermatology lists silicon alongside zinc, selenium, copper, and manganese as playing a positive role in maintaining skin health, noting deficiency may contribute to visible skin-aging signs.

Review
Bjorklund, Shanaida, Gontova et al., Current Medicinal Chemistry (2025)
Silicon Absorption and Bioavailability

Beer-derived silicon is absorbed similarly to pure orthosilicic acid, evidencing high bioavailability of the monomeric form

In healthy volunteers, serum and urinary silicon rose comparably after ingesting beer or an orthosilicic acid solution (about 55% absorption for both), while ethanol or water controls produced no rise - indicating monomeric orthosilicic acid is readily bioavailable.

Human study
Sripanyakorn, Jugdaohsingh, Elliott et al., British Journal of Nutrition (2004)
Silicon Absorption and Bioavailability

Monomeric silicon forms are absorbed far better than polymerized/particulate silica sources

Comparing eight high-silicon sources in healthy volunteers, absorption (via urinary excretion) was highest for monomeric forms like monomethylsilanetriol and alcohol-free beer (~64%) versus only 1-4% for polymerized colloidal silica and magnesium trisilicate antacid - chemical speciation governs bioavailability.

Human comparative study
Sripanyakorn, Jugdaohsingh, Dissayabutr et al., British Journal of Nutrition (2009)
Silicon Absorption and Bioavailability

Different soluble orthosilicic acid supplement formulations (powder vs. liquid) show comparable relative silicon absorption

In a randomized, double-blind crossover pilot study of 5 healthy men, three differently formulated orthosilicic acid supplements (powder and two liquid forms) produced no significant differences in urinary silicon excretion, indicating comparable bioavailability across soluble monomeric formulations.

Biotin and Hair Growth / Deficiency Effects on Hair

Systematic review finds biotin's evidence for hair/nail growth is largely limited to deficiency states, not healthy individuals

Reviewing 18 published cases of biotin use for hair and nail changes, all patients had an underlying pathology (e.g. inherited biotin deficiency, brittle nail syndrome); the authors conclude supplementation is more clearly of benefit in these uncommon deficiency-related cases than in healthy individuals.

Biotin and Hair Growth / Deficiency Effects on Hair

Roughly 1 in 3 women presenting with hair loss had biochemically low serum biotin

In women complaining of hair loss, serum biotin deficiency was found in 38% of cases; the author cautions against indiscriminate biotin supplementation for hair loss unless deficiency is actually demonstrated by testing and history.

Biotin Interference with Diagnostic Lab Tests

Case report: high-dose biotin supplementation caused falsely elevated thyroid hormone results mimicking disease relapse

A Graves' disease patient taking a high daily dose of biotin showed markedly elevated free T4 and T3 not due to true relapse; levels normalized only after the lab's immunoassay was switched from a streptavidin-biotin-based method to a biotin-free one, confirming biotin interference as the cause.
