Bacillus Coagulans IS-2 (Our Strain) - IBS Clinical Trials

A randomized trial found real relief from abdominal pain and better bowel movements in adults

In a double-blind trial of 136 adults with IBS (Rome III criteria), 8 weeks of Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 (2 billion CFU/day) significantly reduced abdominal discomfort/pain intensity and increased complete spontaneous bowel movements compared with placebo, with normal bloodwork and no severe adverse events reported.

Bacillus Coagulans IS-2 (Our Strain) - IBS Clinical Trials

The same strain reduced IBS pain intensity in children aged 4 to 12

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 141 children with IBS (Rome III criteria), 8 weeks of Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 significantly reduced weekly pain-intensity scores and improved stool consistency, bloating, distension, straining, urgency, and passage of gas and mucus compared with placebo.

The strain alone significantly improved functional constipation in adults

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 100 adults with functional constipation, 4 weeks of Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 (2 billion CFU/day) significantly increased weekly bowel movements, with 98% of the probiotic group achieving normal stool consistency versus 74% on placebo, and relief from incomplete evacuation and painful defecation.

Bacillus Coagulans IS-2 (Our Strain) - Additional Real Research

Combined with lactulose, the strain sped up relief of constipation symptoms

In a 150-participant trial, Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 plus lactulose improved stool consistency earlier than lactulose alone and significantly reduced sensation of incomplete evacuation and defecation/abdominal pain, an effect the researchers linked to the strain's ability to produce short-chain fatty acids.

Bacillus Coagulans IS-2 (Our Strain) - Additional Real Research

In resistance-trained men, the strain increased amino-acid absorption from whey protein

A 60-day double-blind trial in resistance-trained males found that adding Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 to daily whey protein significantly increased plasma branched-chain amino acid levels and improved leg-press strength and vertical jump power versus whey protein alone - a different context from IBS, included here as genuine strain-specific research, not an IBS claim.

Bacillus Coagulans (Other Strains) - Clinical Trials in IBS

Adding a Bacillus coagulans strain to a low-FODMAP diet outperformed diet alone

Spore-Forming Probiotics - Mechanisms and Stability

A 2026 review explains why spore-forming Bacillus species survive where other probiotics fail

A review of spore-forming probiotics describes how their endospores - dormant, highly resistant cell forms - give them remarkable resilience through manufacturing, storage and passage through stomach acid, along with gut adhesion and immunomodulatory effects, while also flagging real limitations such as dose standardization, quality control and off-target risks in immunocompromised individuals.

Spore-Forming Probiotics - Mechanisms and Stability

A review calls spore-forming Bacillus probiotics 'benefits with concerns'

Frequently asked questions

What is CanPrev Pro-Biotik IBS Support and what does it do?

It's a vegetable capsule delivering 2 billion CFU of Bacillus coagulans IS-2. It's a source of probiotics that help manage and reduce IBS symptoms such as pain intensity, bloating, and the sense of incomplete evacuation, and help improve stool consistency for adults with IBS.

How is this different from CanPrev's other Pro-Biotik products?

This product's single strain, Bacillus coagulans IS-2, and its NPN (80111601) are both entirely different from CanPrev's other probiotics - Pro-Biotik 15B (NPN 80020819) and Pro-Biotik 50B Extra Strength (NPN 80108931), which use Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, and Post-Biotik Immunobiotics (NPN 80112753) and the Women's Probiotic (NPN 80111463). This is the only one of the five specifically formulated and authorized for IBS symptom relief.

How do I take it?

Adults (19 years and older): take one (1) capsule, one (1) to two (2) times per day, at least 2 to 3 hours before or after antibiotics, or as directed by a health care practitioner.

Can children take this product?

The real product label does authorize a pediatric dose alongside the adult dose: ages 4 to 18, one (1) capsule per day (2 to 3 hours from antibiotics); for children under 6, open the capsule and mix the contents into food or drink to prevent choking. This page and the Amazon listing are positioned for adult use - always read the actual label and consult a health care practitioner before giving any natural health product to a child.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

No. Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming species formulated to be shelf-stable at room temperature.

Who should use caution, or not use it?

Do not use if you have an immune-compromised condition (e.g. AIDS, lymphoma, patients undergoing long-term corticosteroid treatment). Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have a fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea or severe abdominal pain, and stop use if digestive upset occurs, worsens, or persists beyond 3 days.

Is it allergen-friendly?

Yes - it contains no gluten, dairy, soy, wheat, yeast, sugar, or artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, in a vegetable capsule.

Is CanPrev Pro-Biotik IBS Support made in Canada?

Yes. It is formulated and made in Canada by CanPrev Natural Health Products Ltd. (Toronto, ON) and licensed by Health Canada under NPN 80111601.
