A narrative review of nutrition in elderly hip-fracture patients found that meta-analyses and umbrella reviews consistently show combined calcium and vitamin D supplementation reduces hip-fracture risk, with the greatest benefit in older, institutionalized adults.

Review
Cianferotti et al., Nutrients (2024)
Vitamin D3 & Calcium Absorption

Vitamin D3 raised blood vitamin D levels more effectively than vitamin D2 in a meta-analysis of RCTs

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials directly comparing the two forms found vitamin D3 was significantly more efficacious than vitamin D2 at raising serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations, particularly with bolus dosing.

Meta-analysis
Tripkovic et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2012)
Vitamin K2 (MK-7) & Bone Health

Both low- and high-dose MK-7 protected bone microarchitecture in an osteoporosis model

In rats with osteoporosis induced by estrogen deficiency and glucocorticoid exposure, both a low dose (100 mcg/kg) and a high dose (20 mg/kg) of menaquinone-7 (MK-7) significantly improved trabecular bone microarchitecture and restored bone-remodeling protein expression, with no significant difference between the doses.

Animal Study
Chiang et al., Nutrients (2026)
Vitamin K2 (MK-7) & Bone Health

Habitual MK-7 intake was linked to higher bone mineral density in a Japanese meta-analysis

A meta-analysis of six studies (2,327 people) found that habitual intake of natto, the richest dietary source of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), was associated with significantly higher serum MK-7, improved osteocalcin carboxylation, and modestly greater bone mineral density, though evidence certainty was rated low to moderate.

Meta-analysis
Wen et al., Frontiers in Nutrition (2025)
Vitamin K2 (MK-7) & Bone Health

Adding vitamin K2 to a bisphosphonate improved bone strength beyond the bisphosphonate alone

In ovariectomized mice, combining vitamin K2 (menatetrenone) with the bisphosphonate alendronate produced greater increases in bone mineral density and mechanical strength at the femur than alendronate alone.

Animal Study
Sasaki et al., Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism (2010)
Magnesium & Bone/Muscle Function

Higher magnesium intake was associated with greater hip bone density in older adults

A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort and cross-sectional studies in adults 60 and older found a significant positive association between magnesium intake and hip bone mineral density, though evidence for other skeletal sites and fracture outcomes remains limited.

Meta-analysis
Groenendijk et al., Bone (2021)
Magnesium & Bone/Muscle Function

Magnesium is a cofactor for over 300 enzymatic reactions, including bone mineralization

A comprehensive review describes magnesium's role as a cofactor in energy metabolism, muscle contraction and calcium-channel function, noting that inadequate magnesium status has been associated with increased risk of osteoporosis and impaired bone mineralization.

Review
Fatima et al., Cureus (2024)
Magnesium & Bone/Muscle Function

Calcium, magnesium and vitamin D are highlighted together in research on age-related bone and muscle loss

A narrative review of dietary strategies against osteosarcopenia (combined age-related bone and muscle loss) identifies protein, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D intake as key modifiable nutritional factors supporting musculoskeletal integrity in older adults.

Review
De Rui et al., Aging Clinical and Experimental Research (2019)
Zinc & Bone/Tissue Formation

Zinc status has been linked to bone mineral density across the lifespan

A narrative review of 16 studies on blood zinc, dietary zinc intake and zinc supplementation found that low zinc intake (under 3 mg/day) may be a risk factor for osteopenia and osteoporosis, and that zinc supplementation studies showed benefits for maintaining bone mineral density.

Review
Rondanelli et al., Acta Ortopedica Mexicana (2021)
Zinc & Bone/Tissue Formation

Zinc stimulates bone-building cells and suppresses bone-resorbing cells

A mechanistic study found that zinc promotes osteoblast differentiation and mineralization while suppressing osteoclast differentiation, acting in part by antagonizing NF-kB activation, a pathway that otherwise favors bone resorption over bone formation.

In Vitro Study
Yamaguchi & Weitzmann, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry (2011)
Zinc & Bone/Tissue Formation

Zinc citrate was absorbed as well as zinc gluconate, and better than zinc oxide, in a controlled trial

Using a double-isotope tracer method in healthy adults, researchers found that fractional zinc absorption from zinc citrate (61.3%) was not different from zinc gluconate (60.9%), and both were significantly better absorbed than zinc oxide (49.9%) - a reminder that the chelated/organic form of a mineral can meaningfully affect its absorption.

Human RCT
Wegmuller et al., Journal of Nutrition (2013)

Frequently asked questions

What is CanPrev Healthy Bones MCHA and what does it do?

It's a microcrystalline hydroxyapatite (MCHA) bone complex - 426.67mg of calcium hydroxyapatite plus hydrolyzed collagen, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, boron, copper, manganese, silicon and zinc per capsule. It helps in the maintenance and development of bones and teeth, and adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthy diet helps prevent bone loss and osteoporosis.

How do I take it?

Adults take two (2) capsules, one (1) to three (3) times per day with food, or as directed by a qualified health care practitioner. Take a few hours before or after other medications or natural health products.

What is MCHA and how is it different from regular calcium?

MCHA (microcrystalline hydroxyapatite) is calcium hydroxyapatite - the natural calcium-and-phosphorus mineral complex found in bone - rather than an isolated calcium salt like calcium carbonate or calcium citrate.

What sizes are available?

CanPrev Healthy Bones MCHA comes in a 240 vegetable capsule bottle (up to a 120-day supply at the minimum dose) and a 120 vegetable capsule bottle (up to a 60-day supply).

Why does this formula include hydrolyzed collagen?

Hydrolyzed Type I collagen is included alongside the MCHA mineral complex because collagen makes up the organic matrix of bone, complementing the mineral component of the formula.

Is it vegan?

The capsule shell is a vegetable capsule and the formula is free of gluten, dairy and soy - but it contains hydrolyzed collagen, which is animal-derived, so unlike some of CanPrev's other calcium formulas, Healthy Bones MCHA is not vegan.

Who should use caution, or not use it?

Ask a health care practitioner prior to use if you have a liver disorder. Do not use if the safety seal is broken. Take a few hours before or after other medications.
