Chromium Picolinate & Glucose Metabolism

Chromium improved insulin markers in a meta-analysis of PCOS trials

A meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials (683 women) found chromium supplementation - including chromium picolinate at 200 mcg - significantly reduced fasting insulin and improved insulin-sensitivity markers, performing comparably to metformin on several measures.

Meta-analysis

Chromium Picolinate & Glucose Metabolism

Chromium picolinate lowered insulin-resistance markers in a placebo-controlled trial

Human RCT
Moradi et al., Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology (2020)
Chromium Picolinate & Glucose Metabolism

A chromium-containing combination improved glycemic status in dysglycemia

In a randomized trial, a nutraceutical combining chromium picolinate with Ilex paraguariensis and white mulberry reduced fasting and postprandial glucose and glycated hemoglobin versus placebo in adults with dysglycemia, alongside improved insulin sensitivity.

Human RCT
Derosa et al., Life (Basel) (2021)
Cinnamon & Blood Sugar

A 28-trial meta-analysis found cinnamon improved glycemic markers

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 28 randomized trials (3,054 patients with type 2 diabetes) found cinnamon supplementation significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, HbA1c and HOMA-IR versus control, with the largest effects seen in capsule form.

Meta-analysis
de Moura et al., Nutrition Reviews (2025)
Cinnamon & Blood Sugar

A dose-response meta-analysis confirmed glycemic benefits across 24 trials

An updated dose-response meta-analysis of 24 randomized trials found cinnamon supplementation produced a statistically significant reduction in fasting blood sugar, HOMA-IR and HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes.

Meta-analysis
Moridpour et al., Phytotherapy Research (2023)
Cinnamon & Blood Sugar

An honest null result for cassia bark powder

An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of cassia ground bark powder (1-2 g per day for 90 days) in type 2 diabetes found only an insignificant reduction in glucose and lipid measures - a reminder that not every cinnamon form or dose shows a significant effect.

Meta-analysis
Mandal et al., Cureus (2021)
Gymnema Sylvestre & Glucose/Sugar-Craving Research

A 14-day gymnema regimen reduced sugar cravings and sweetened-beverage intake

In a randomized crossover trial, adults identifying as having a 'sweet tooth' who used Gymnema sylvestre mints ad libitum for 14 days reduced their daily sugar-sweetened beverage intake by 42% and overall sugar cravings by 28% versus placebo.

Human RCT
Hsiao et al., Appetite (2025)
Gymnema Sylvestre & Glucose/Sugar-Craving Research

A 14-day intervention lowered chocolate consumption in a laboratory setting

Healthy adults given a 14-day Gymnema sylvestre (gymnemic acid) intervention ate significantly fewer chocolate bars than a control group by the end of the study, with reduced pleasantness ratings for sweet food.

Human RCT
Turner et al., Nutrients (2022)
Gymnema Sylvestre & Glucose/Sugar-Craving Research

Gymnema tea blunted sweet-taste perception and shifted food preference

A randomized study found tea containing Gymnema sylvestre diminished perceived sweetness intensity, reduced liking for sweet foods, and increased the sucrose concentration participants desired in a mixing task - direct evidence of its taste-modulating mechanism.

Human RCT
Noel et al., Appetite (2017)
Bitter Melon & Glucose Research

12 weeks of bitter gourd improved glucose markers in prediabetes

A 12-week randomized controlled trial in a prediabetic population found bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) supplementation significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR compared with a matched placebo.

Human RCT
Mes et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2025)
Bitter Melon & Glucose Research

A meta-analysis found bitter melon improved glycemic control in type 2 diabetes

A meta-analysis of 10 studies (1,045 patients) found Momordica charantia preparations significantly reduced fasting glucose, postprandial glucose and HbA1c compared with placebo, though evidence quality was rated low to moderate.

Meta-analysis
Peter et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2018)
Bitter Melon & Glucose Research

An underpowered but honest trial found only a small HbA1c change

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial added Momordica charantia capsules to standard diabetes therapy and found only a small, non-significant 0.22% difference in HbA1c versus placebo - the trial was underpowered, illustrating why larger studies are needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is AOR Ortho Glucose II?

A 5-ingredient formula combining chromium (167 mcg, as chromium picolinate), cinnamon cassia extract, gymnema sylvestre extract, bitter melon extract and R(+) alpha-lipoic acid (100 mg) in one 285 mg capsule. It is a licensed Natural Health Product, NPN 80027523, that supports healthy glucose metabolism.

How do I take it?

Adults 18 years and older take 1 capsule daily, half an hour before a meal, or as directed by a qualified health care practitioner. Do not crush, mix or blend the capsules - swallow whole.

How is this different from AOR's single-ingredient Chromium Picolinate or High Dose R-Lipoic Acid products?

AOR's single-ingredient Chromium Picolinate and High Dose R-Lipoic Acid products are separate products, each with its own Health Canada licence and its own, different dose (600 mcg chromium and 300 mg R-lipoic acid respectively). Ortho Glucose II (NPN 80027523) is a different, 5-ingredient combination product with its own doses (167 mcg chromium, 100 mg R-alpha-lipoic acid) - each product's dose, directions and claims are governed by its own separate licence, so always follow the label of the specific product you are using.

What does each ingredient contribute?

Chromium helps maintain the body's ability to metabolize nutrients; cinnamon cassia, gymnema sylvestre and bitter melon are traditional botanicals studied for their role in glucose metabolism; R(+) alpha-lipoic acid is a source of an antioxidant that also helps promote healthy glucose metabolism.

Why take it half an hour before a meal?

The label directs taking Ortho Glucose II 30 minutes before a meal, timing the ingredients to when dietary carbohydrates are digested and blood glucose rises.

Is it vegan and allergen-friendly?

Yes - vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free, in a hypromellose (vegetable) capsule.

Who should not use it?

Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking acetaminophen, or hypersensitive or allergic to cinnamon or Peruvian balsam, or if you suffer from acid reflux, stomach or intestinal ulcers, liver disease or alcoholism. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have a kidney disorder or diabetes, or for use beyond 6 months. Stop use and consult a health care practitioner if you experience symptoms of low blood sugar (anxiety, dizziness, confusion, tremor, sweating, paleness, chills, nausea or headache). Not suitable for children.

How long does one bottle last?

90 capsules provide up to a 90-day (3-month) supply at 1 capsule per day.
